The candle is a powerful symbol in human consciousness. There is something about the bright point of light—burning, accepting and resisting a mortal world—which speaks to the deepest part of the human soul. Perhaps this is why candles have such a great significance in so many different religions throughout the world.
Buddhism incorporates a variety of rituals and practices which are intended to aid in the journey to enlightenment and bring blessings upon oneself and others. The practice of meditation is central to nearly all forms of Buddhism and it derives directly from the Buddha’s experiences and teachings
In Buddhism, candles are set in front of statues of the Buddha as a sign of respect. The symbol of the candle’s flame represents the light of the Buddha’s teaching and the enlightenment the lessons added to the world.
After reciting incantations, the monks will place each of their candles in the surrounding monastery alcoves, each housing a small Buddha.
